Patna Planetarium, named as Indira Gandhi Planetarium, and popularly known as Taramandal, is one of the popular tourist destination in the city. It attracts a large number of visitors, both domestic and foreigner. It is one of the largest planetarium in India. The planetarium has been established with a view to present educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky to the general public. It is situated in Indira Gandhi Science Complex, where seminars and exhibitions often takes place.
The foundation stone of Indira Gandhi Science Complex was laid in 1989 and was inaugurated in 1993 by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav. Bihar Council on Science and Technology played an important role in establishing the planetarium. The planetarium conducts regular film shows on astronomy during the day. It has a large dome shaped projection screen where people look (upward) to see the films, like watching sky during the night. The scientific documentaries with quality sound makes the show a memorable experience. The film subject basically revolves around the creation and evolution of the earth and other celestial bodies. The capacity of the Sky theater is 276 seats.
Show Timing : The Planetarium conducts four shows per day. The timing of the shows are : 12:30 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, & 5:00 PM.
How to reach : It is situated by the side of Bailey Road, near Income Tax Circle, in the very heart of the city. It is easily reachable by autos or private vehicles.
